Symptoms of mood disorders can vary based on the type of disorder and the age of the individual. Individuals with a particular disorder are also likely to experience and present symptoms differently than others with the same disorder.

Symptoms may include:

  • Persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and/or helplessness
  • Low self-esteem or feelings of inadequacy
  • Excessive guilt
  • Loss of interest in usual activities or activities once enjoyed
  • Dysregulated sleep patterns
  • Changes in appetite or weight
  • Decreased energy and/or lack of motivation
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Decrease in decision making ability
  • Suicidal thoughts or attempts
  • Difficulty with relationships
  • Irritability and/or aggression
  • Hypersensitivity to failure or rejection

Individuals with mood disorders also frequently present physical complaints. These typically include:

  • Headaches
  • Stomach aches
  • Fatigue
